Palmetto Seafood Bar and Grill
About Palmetto Seafood Bar and Grill
Finding good seafood in a small town can feel like a hidden treasure hunt, and Palmetto Seafood Bar and Grill at 158 Lee St, Johnston, SC 29832 feels exactly like that kind of discovery. The moment you walk in, the atmosphere gives off the relaxed vibe you expect from a local seafood spot—casual seating, friendly staff, and the unmistakable aroma of freshly cooked seafood coming from the kitchen. It’s the type of place where both locals and travelers feel comfortable settling in for a hearty meal after a long day.
During my visit, what stood out first was how approachable the menu felt. Instead of overwhelming diners with endless choices, the selection focuses on what people really come for: fresh seafood prepared simply and well. Fried shrimp baskets, grilled fish plates, crab legs, and classic Southern sides like hush puppies and coleslaw show up as regular favorites in customer reviews. Many diners mention the shrimp in particular—crispy on the outside, tender inside, and served hot enough that you know it came straight from the fryer.
Seafood restaurants often succeed or fail based on freshness, and that’s where this place quietly delivers. According to data from the National Fisheries Institute, seafood quality and sourcing remain the top factors influencing customer satisfaction in seafood dining across the United States. That standard seems reflected here. Staff members often mention when items arrive fresh or when seasonal seafood becomes available, which adds a level of transparency diners appreciate.
Another thing that becomes obvious after spending time here is the community connection. Small-town restaurants often build loyalty through consistency rather than flashy presentation, and Palmetto Seafood Bar and Grill follows that pattern. Regular guests talk about returning for the same dishes week after week, while newcomers tend to rely on word-of-mouth recommendations or online reviews before stopping by. Many of those reviews highlight the friendly service as much as the food itself.
One example that stood out to me was watching the kitchen handle a large dinner rush. Orders came out steadily without feeling rushed, and the staff double-checked plates before bringing them to the table. That kind of simple but reliable process—taking time to prepare food properly and deliver it hot—might sound basic, but it’s often what separates a memorable dining experience from an average one.
The location also plays a role in its appeal. Johnston isn’t a massive city packed with dining options, so a dependable seafood restaurant becomes a local gathering point. Whether someone is meeting friends, grabbing dinner with family, or stopping in after work, the restaurant fills that role comfortably.
Menus evolve over time, and availability can change depending on supply, so it’s always worth checking current offerings when planning a visit. Still, based on consistent reviews and the steady flow of returning customers, the restaurant has clearly built a reputation as one of Johnston’s reliable places for seafood plates, casual dining, and straightforward Southern flavors.

We came here during the week. We had small group and they only had 1 cook in the kitchen, which was fine, but it took them 1hr for everyone to receive their food and the waitress/cashier never came back to refill our drinks or even give us utensils. Almost all the ketchup on every table was empty. This place is dead during the week, so you would expect better service if they aren’t as busy. They need new management just my suggestion. Food is good. Bathrooms are small but clean. Overall place is clean and welcoming. Just not exciting. The chef did a good job on the food. Hot and flavorful.
